The National Football League (NFL) and the NFL Referees Association (NFLRA), which represents 121 game officials, remain in negotiations over a new collective bargaining agreement set to expire after the 2025 season.[1][2]
Pro Football Talk reported that the league could turn to replacement referees if talks extend into the preseason for the 2026 campaign. ESPN obtained internal emails indicating the NFL has started "laying the groundwork" for such a contingency.[1][3]
The use of replacement officials would recall the 2012 labor dispute, when the NFL locked out referees from August 7 to September 27. Replacements officiated Weeks 1 through 3, culminating in the September 24 "Fail Mary" play—a disputed hail-mary touchdown ruled for the Seattle Seahawks in a 14-12 win over the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football.[4][5]
ESPN college football analyst Pat McAfee, a former Indianapolis Colts punter from 2007 to 2012, reacted on X to reports of potential replacements for 2026, posting: "Nope we can’t be doing replacement high school refs in the nfl again."[3][6]
McAfee urged current officials to embrace accountability, modern technology and a commitment to the game, while referencing his own experiences with 2012 replacements, including spotters for out-of-bounds punts.[6]
The NFL has previously emphasized efforts to enhance officiating performance and accountability, stating it aims to ensure the highest-performing officials handle major games.[1]
