Stribling's Ankle Surgery Sidelines 49ers Rookie for Weeks
San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver De'Zhaun Stribling underwent surgery on his injured left ankle and could miss up to 10 weeks, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday. The team has placed Stribling on injured reserve, a move that will keep him out for a minimum of four games.
Stribling, a second-round pick out of Ole Miss, was hurt late in the first quarter of San Francisco's Week 1 win over the Los Angeles Rams. He returned to the field before going down again on the 49ers' next offensive drive and had to be carted off. The injury adds to an already depleted 49ers receiving corps. Ricky Pearsall is out for the season with a knee injury, leaving San Francisco to lean on veterans Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel and Demarcus Robinson. The trio combined for 14 catches, 147 yards and three touchdowns against the Rams, a game in which quarterback Brock Purdy delivered a strong performance despite Stribling failing to record a catch in his NFL debut.
Stribling had drawn praise for his offseason and training camp work before the injury. With him sidelined for an extended stretch, San Francisco's passing offense will need increased production from its established receivers as the team hosts the Miami Dolphins in Week 2.
