Detroit Lions president Rod Wood confirmed the team has requested that retired center Frank Ragnow repay a portion of his signing bonus following his retirement.[1] Ragnow, a four-time Pro Bowl selection (2021-2024), announced his retirement in March 2025 after playing 92 regular-season games for the Lions from 2018 to 2024.[2][3]
Ragnow signed a four-year, $54 million contract extension with the Lions on May 12, 2021, which included $30.75 million in guarantees.[2] The deal featured a signing bonus with cap implications prorated across seasons, including $1.5 million annually from 2023 to 2026.[1][2] Wood noted the team's view that such bonuses represent advance payment for services not rendered upon early retirement.[1]
The Lions have applied similar repayment requests to former players, including Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders, who retired abruptly in 1999, and Hall of Fame wide receiver Calvin Johnson, who retired in 2015.[1] Sanders returned a portion of his $11 million signing bonus, while Johnson repaid about $8 million.[1]
Retired Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, a seven-time Pro Bowl player, criticized the Lions' request on X (formerly Twitter), calling it "bulls---" in the context of Ragnow's injury history.[4] Kelce argued that signing bonuses protect players from career-ending injuries, citing Ragnow's record of playing through ailments including a toe injury requiring partial amputation in 2023, multiple knee issues, and back problems.[4][3]
Ragnow attempted a comeback in November 2025 but failed a physical due to a torn hamstring.[1] Including playoffs, he appeared in 100 games for the Lions.[3] Wood emphasized the contractual precedent, stating, "It’s the Lions’ money, it’s not the player’s money."[1]
Kelce acknowledged teams' rights in cases of unexcused retirements but viewed Ragnow's case differently given the physical toll of the NFL.[4]
